  • Minutes

    Welcome!

Approve of Agenda and 10/13 minutes

    Amy motions and Ivan approved

    Public Comment

    • Dianna is wondering about Nectir integration with Canvas
      • Amy knows that Foothill is working with Nectir, so there is training available at the district level
      • We need to discuss in COOL and maybe through Academic Senate as well to decide if it’s something we want to integrate
      • Cheryl brings up that there is a year-long trial
    • Amy brings up that the Foothill online committee is interested in having a meeting with us about AI agents being used in classes; perhaps there could be a joint action on this with Senate
    • We’ve gotten inquiries about a lockdown browser

    Quick Notes

    • RSI Training Update
      • We're hoping for something official to come out very, very soon
      • Please direct any faculty who are anxious to start the training to talk to their Deans; we may be able to get them started before the official agreement comes out
    • Potential J1 Guidance Workgroup
      • Senate is interested in starting a workgroup – any interest in joining?
      • Amy thinks this is a good idea because a lot of people are having trouble with the form; some standardization and guidance would be helpful so people don’t get dinged
      • The whole process could use some revision, but we can start with a checklist
      • We are definitely interested in collaborating
    • Pronto visit to Department Meetings
      • Let James know if you’re interested

    Harmonize Feedback for next meeting

    • Submit feedback to Cheryl
    • James suggests cancelling the next meeting to use it as working time for reviewing Harmonize; then we can touch base in the last COOL meeting of the quarter
      • Amy motions to approve this suggestion; Ivan seconds; no objections
      • We won’t be meeting as a committee on November 10; this will be our working meeting time
    • Cheryl will send everyone the link to format the feedback
    • COOL member feedback is valuable but we especialy want feedback from some folks outside of COOL as well; we’ll end out reminders as we get closer to the deadline

    Modality and AI Survey

    • AI Questions for Survey
    • Regarding biosecurity, responses vary widely - some people don’t care, some people want more training, some people are concerned
    • Jacob will remind DSG to fill out the survey

    SSC Tutor Feedback

    • Diana and Amy got some interesting data form a focus group earlier in October
    • Students are using AI a lot and they want more clarification from instructors on expectations, guidelines, and boundaries
    • AI is trickiest for asynch classes
    • Students really enjoyed the library workshop and think that should be standard within classes
    • Until we make more explicit policies (like around AI agents) students are in the dark, so we need to have these discussions
    • The CIS faculty needs to clarify to students – anything coded by AI has notation embedded saying it was coded by AI
    • Detection is a loaded word with AI – anything written in Google Docs or Microsoft Word has used AI. We need to know what kind of AI has been used, but it’s really difficult to track, and the district currently does not have an AI detection software

    POCR Plug and Play Courses

    • In the Canvas Commons, they’ve released some plug and play template courses that are already aligned with POCR
    • COMM C1000, ENGL C1000, ENGL C1001, and STAT C1000 are all already available
    • POLS C1000 and PSYC C1000 will be coming soon
    • Let’s spread the word to make sure faculty are aware
    • These can be great resources for teachers new to teaching online
    • Important to note - if you start adapting these templates, they are no longer POCR aligned, but it will hopefully save time in getting it approved
    • We need training because it is very easy to break the course

    No Good of the Order

Amy motions to adjourn at 12:01; Ivan and Lianna second
