Academic Reading and Writing
Course Description
Part 1: In this course, students receive instruction in academic reading and writing, including writing processes, effective use of language, analytical thinking, and the foundations of academic research. Part 2: This course introduces students to university-level reading and writing, with an emphasis on analysis. Students will closely examine a variety of texts (personal, popular, literary, professional, academic) from culturally diverse traditions. Students will practice common rhetorical strategies used in academic writing and compose clear, well-organized, and well-developed essays with varying purposes and differing audiences, from personal to academic.

ENGL 1000.03Q: (Previously EWRT 1A) This section is for students with an ENGL 1000 and LART 250 placement and requires concurrent enrollment in LART 250.03Q (CRN 46777). Open to all students but required for students with a high school GPA below 2.59. Students who place directly into ENGL 1000 should search for a section without the "Q" designation. For assistance, please contact the English Performance Success counselors at eps@deanza.edu. HYBRID, meets on-campus and online. This class meets each week on campus and online as noted in the class listing. Students must have access to a computer, the internet and an individual email address. Most De Anza classes will use the Canvas course management system.
