MATH 23
Engineering Statistics

Course Description

This course provides a comprehensive introduction to probabilistic and statistical modeling for students in engineering, economics, finance, and related disciplines in the mathematical sciences. Students will explore a variety of applications that require decision-making in the presence of uncertainty. Topics covered include the collection and analysis of data using graphical and numerical techniques, discrete and continuous probability distributions, cumulative and joint probability distribution functions, and statistical inference. The course also introduces experimental design and equation fitting when appropriate. Many applications require the use of technology, including computers and graphing calculators. Computer simulations will be utilized to illustrate complex topics and to provide visualization of advanced theoretical concepts, such as the Central Limit Theorem.
