Elementary Japanese (First Quarter)

Course Description

This course offers an introduction to the Japanese language and culture, with a focus on language as both a primary expression of culture and a medium of communication. Students will develop the four essential language skills-listening, speaking, reading, and writing-along with sociocultural knowledge that is vital for effective communication in Japanese. Japanese will be the primary language of instruction. Oral practice will be emphasized and supported by a foundational understanding of language structures. Students are expected to master two of the Japanese syllabic writing systems, hiragana and katakana, as well as 29 kanji (Chinese characters).
