Canvas / Insights Implementation – Status and Path Forward

The committee discussed the current status of Canvas/Insights implementation and acknowledged that development has paused while key sequencing and infrastructure questions are clarified. The central focus of the meeting was identifying a practical path forward.

A Canvas SLO professional development course has been created to serve as a future hub for faculty training and materials. However, the committee has not yet engaged with the vendor’s pre-built training resources, and additional coordination is needed before formal rollout. Dialogue centered on how to align vendor materials, local workflow expectations, and backend data structures prior to launching faculty-facing training.

Members emphasized that data extraction timing, reporting integration, and system automation must be incorporated into implementation planning. These factors should be considered alongside faculty training development to ensure that front-end rollout and back-end infrastructure are aligned and sequenced intentionally.

    SLO Data Extraction and Timing

The committee confirmed that official SLO data will be pulled from eLumen after course outlines are finalized, with an estimated extraction timeline of June 2026. Premature extraction was discouraged in order to avoid inconsistencies or rework.

The implementation goal remains faculty use of the Canvas-based system beginning in Fall.

    Faculty Training and Pilot Strategy

A Spring pilot cohort remains the preferred strategy for reestablishing forward momentum. Training will utilize sample or prior-year SLO data until final uploads occur.
Participation will be voluntary, with a small group selected to identify workflow refinements and surface technical considerations before broader rollout. Additional coordination with Online Education and Insights support will be required as training materials are reviewed and incorporated.

    Faculty Workflow

The committee revisited the intended faculty workflow:

    • Faculty assess outcomes using Canvas rubrics.
    • SLOs are embedded as rubric criteria within existing assignments.
    • Assessment data are captured directly through Canvas and processed via Insights.

The system is designed to embed SLO assessment within existing grading practices, with the long-term goal of replacing decentralized Microsoft forms and spreadsheets.

    Data Integration and Backend Infrastructure

Insights exports assessment data in CSV format. Student demographic and related data must be merged from Banner. Integration is not currently automated and will require coordination with ETS regarding data structure, reporting processes, system access, and potential automation options.

Standardized data structures and placeholders may be needed to support consistent reporting across divisions. The SLO coordinator will continue participation in the course outline approval workflow to ensure alignment between curriculum updates and SLO tracking.

    Long-Term Direction

The near-term objective is active faculty use of the Canvas-based SLO assessment system in Fall. Longer-term integration with Precision Campus remains a multi-year goal.

    Next Steps

    • Advance backend data integration planning with ETS.
    • Engage vendor training resources and align with local workflow expectations.
    • Finalize Spring pilot structure and training materials.
    • Provide updates on automation and reporting infrastructure.

The committee will continue focusing on building a sustainable, aligned assessment system that strengthens accreditation documentation while embedding SLO assessment into faculty workflow.
