Telling Your Story

Presentation and narrative due in class on

Monday, January 11

Two to three pages, typed, printed out, and stapled.

This assignment consists of both a presentation and a write-up. We will break up into groups of four or five, and each of you will present your story in a five to ten-minute presentation to the other people in your group.
Your presentation will consist of a story that illustrates how you have learned about roles and rules that pertain to gender and/or sexuality.
For the written part of this assignment you should have an introduction and conclusion. Remember, though, that in at least the first two paragraphs of your write-up you will be telling a story. Here is a suggested outline:

  1. An introduction that introduces the setting, the main characters, and the relationships of the characters to each other. If you are not the one most affected by the role or rule you should highlight your relationship to the person or people who are most affected by the role or rule as well as the people who are enforcing the role or rule.
  2. At least one paragraph that narrates how you learned about a specific role or rule. The paragraph should explain the relationships of the characters to the role or rule. What is the role or rule? Who upholds the role or rule? How were the characters' lives affected by the role or rule?
  3. At least one paragraph that describes what happens when someone does not follow the role or rule (especially if you have not yet mentioned anyone who has broken the rule or not played the role). If possible, try to write about a specific example. You should also consider people who are subject to the role or rule who disagree with it or people who are trying to preserve it even though many people are not following it.
  4. A conclusion that gives your opinion of the role or rule and a hypothetical situation when the role or rule might involve you either as a member of a group that upholds or changes the role or rule or as someone who will be subjected to the role or rule. In other words, do you think you will follow the rule, change the rule, or enforce the rule?

Make sure that you write transitions to show the relationships between your paragraphs.
For the presentation, you will present only for the other people in your group. You will not present for the whole class. You should use the written component of this assignment for your presentation, but you should not just read your narrative to the other people in your group.
