New Student Orientation

When you participate in orientation, you will get help completing an abbreviated educational plan for your first one or two quarters. These are important steps in qualifying for priority registration and making the most of your time at De Anza.

We recommend completing the orientation before you make an appointment with a counselor, since the orientation program will answer many of your initial questions about classes, ed plans and related topics.

  • You must apply for admission first, in order to obtain your student identification number – known as a Campuswide ID or CWID – which you need to sign up for orientation.
  • We also recommend checking your placement and completing the assessment process before you take the orientation program.
  • You will qualify for priority registration for the following quarter, as soon as you complete the orientation and other required steps.
  • During the orientation, you'll learn how to build an education plan, which is another required step to get priority registration. You can learn more about this by visiting the Degree Audit webpage.

Completing Orientation

There are two ways to complete orientation:

  • In person: You can sign up for a session on campus that will take about 40 minutes
  • Online: You can take a course online that you can complete at your own page, in one sitting or multiple sittings

You can choose the format you prefer. Learn more by clicking each of the red bars:

In-Person Orientation

We're currently offering in-person orientation in the RSS Building, Room 146. Each in-person session includes

  • A 30-minute presentation, followed by
  • A brief (5-10 minutes) meeting with a counselor to discuss your educational plan for the first quarter

To sign up for an orientation, you will need your De Anza CWID – this is your 8-digit student identification number, also known as a Campuswide ID. You'll find your CWID in the email you receive from De Anza after you apply for admission.

Online (Self-Paced) Orientation

We're currently offering a self-paced online orientation that can be completed in one sitting or multiple sittings. It is presented as a course on the Canvas online learning platform, which is also used for online classes at De Anza

There is no fee to enroll in the orientation course – it's free! – but you will need your eight-digit De Anza student identification number, also known as a Campuswide ID or CWID, to log in. (You'll find your CWID in the email you receive from De Anza after you apply for admission.) Here are the steps to enroll:
